Twitter Spam

by Rick Itzkowich on November 19, 2008

Twitter can be a useful platform to open conversations. Unfortunately, because of the ease of sending messages with services like Tweetlater that allow you to send automatic thank you notes to new followers,  you often get messages that are the equivalent of SPAM via email. These messages are trying to sell you something (even if that something is free) vs. building a relationship.

So rather than send a message directing someone to “do something” or “check out a free something,” you’re much better off thanking them for the follow and asking them the following question “What are you doing lately that’s interesting?”

If someone is truly interested in connecting with you, they will probably answer your question and get the conversation going. Once you build the relationship a bit, then they will probably much more receptive to checking out what you have to offer.

This is an awesome idea! I changed my auto response on TweetLater already!! I am curious to see what kind of response I get!
