Closing Your Duplicate LinkedIn Account(s)

by admin on March 1, 2011

Having multiple profiles on LinkedIn presents a double problem for you. The first one is that it is against LinkedIn’s Terms of Service (TOS) and it could result in LinkedIn closing all of your accounts. The second problem is that by having multiple profiles, you are creating confusion for the people who may want to connect with you.

Remember that there are only two reasons to be on LinkedIn:

a) To find (others)

b) To be found (by others)

Creating confusion creates un-necessary friction for people connecting with you. Watch the short video below on how to close your duplicate profiles.

Starting your own LinkedIn group

by admin on February 27, 2011

People are constantly asking me if they should start their own LinkedIn group. Below are some good guidelines.

Before you go on creating your own group, I highly recommend you participate in one or more groups yourself to get a feel for it. A great group to do this with is the Link Power Group -http://linkd.in/Link_Power
You should also answer the following questions:
  1. Why do you want to create a LinkedIn group? What is your objective in creating a group?
  2. What’s unique about your group that would have others want to join it? With close to 800,000 groups on LinkedIn there is a lot of competition already for people to join groups. So unless you offer exceptional value or a very unique angle that no other group does, it will be hard for you to attract people
  3. How much time are you willing to invest in managing the group? It takes a lot of time to build AND manage a group. Unless you will initially devote 4-6 hours per week – or have someone do this for you – you will get very little traction for your group.

Is LinkedIn more valuable than Facebook?

by admin on February 19, 2011

FB vs LinkedInThis question was recently posted on LinkedIn’s Link Power Group. Below is my view on this question.

To paraphrase Einstein – it is all relative.

If you are a business professional, having a LinkedIn presence is a MUST. Imagine being in business today without a website and/or an email address. Do you think that people might doubt your credibility and commitment to what you do? I believe the same is now true for being on LinkedIn. Business people expect other business people to be on LinkedIn. Failure to do so sends a very strong negative message that you are failing to stay current with the way business is being conducted today.

LinkedIn’s EXCLUSIVE purpose is business. Facebook is trying to be all things to all people.

To use a metaphor. Who is more valuable, a general practitioner (GP) or a heart surgeon? You wouldn’t want to go to a GP when you need a heart operation or go to a surgeon when you have a minor infection. LinkedIn = surgeon. FB = GP.

My wife has zero use for LinkedIn and FB is incredibly valuable to her. For me is almost the opposite – I do find some value in FB but nowhere near the value I derive from LinkedIn.

What about you – what do you think?

by admin on February 14, 2011

Let’s say that you connected with someone on LinkedIn who turns out to be somewhat of a nuisance. How do you disconnect from them?

LinkedIn makes it very easy to remove one of your connections – and best of all, they won’t be notified that you removed them. To learn how to do this, please watch the short video tutorial below:

Hiding your LinkedIn activity

by admin on February 10, 2011

I was recently asked how to hide your network activity on LinkedIn. While I strongly recommend that people make their LinkedIn activity visible to everyone on LinkedIn – it is a great way to get Visibility in that community – people may have their reasons for hiding it.

You can watch a short video on how to do this by clicking on the link below.

Helping yourself by helping others

by admin on January 13, 2011

Today’s post is by one of LinkedIn connections. The best definition I’ve heard about networking is:

Helping others as a way of growing YOUR business!

In that spirit I bring you this article by Lynn Brown. I’m helping her tap into a new audience that will hopefully become interested in what she does. She is also helping me by bringing fresh content that I can share with you.

I would love to hear your thoughts on both the article and in having a guest blogger here on the blog.

The 5 Powerful Steps to A Successful Business Blog

Are you looking to become a successful online entrepreneur? Did you know that having the proper social networking in place will be the most important factor to your success?

If you answered ‘yes’ to both those questions, then you know having a proper business blog is essential to building and growing your online business. Your business blog should be viewed as the hub or core of your online success. This hub will serve as a viable tool that can help you build your business through social networking which has the enormous potential for both branding and promoting you and your business.

Discover the 5 powerful steps to implement for a successful business blog:

  • Proper Theme – There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of ‘themes’ you can choose when setting up your blog. Whether you set up your blog through WordPress or any other blog application sites, your theme should reflect the type of business, product or service you provide. The style may be important to your business branding. Maintain your branding through colors, fonts that match logos, product labels and things like that. Your visitors will appreciate the consistency and will associate them to your company or online business.
  • Passion is Key – This is the most important key to any business success. Online or offline, if you don’t have the passion and desire in your heart for what you do, your rate for success will be greatly affected. So many want to blame others or other things for their lack of success. Your visitors and potential customers will be attracted to your enthusiasm and will be more willing to find out more about you and your business. Look inside and see if you truly have the passion to win this game we call online business success!
  • Personality – While this may be similar to other steps discussed here, your personality must always shine through. Your visitors want to know who you are, what you like, where you live and what interests you. When done properly and over time, you will start building important relationships with your visitors, customers and partnerships.
  • Promoting – Social media has opened the door for so many small online businesses to succeed. Utilizing FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube … to name a few, are your tools to help you build and promote your online business. Your blog acts as the hub to your social network. Linking your blog posts and articles to these social sites will get your message and information out and attract traffic. This in turn will help build your ranking with the search engines too. Promoting the right way will build an engine that will keep going and going.
  • Posting Info - In general, 2-3 post per week to keep your blog site fresh and interesting. Encourage your visitors to sign up to follow your posts through your RSS feeds, subscriptions, Twitter and FaceBook. Your posts provides the valuable link source that should be passed out to all your social media sites. Keep your posts between 300-500 words. Always, always be sure your posts offer great content and information. Keep your posts interesting and easy to read. Use formatting such as bold titles, italics to highlight important keywords and list posts are all a great way to keep your visitors wanting to come back to read more!

Would you like your business to be the center of attention? People swarming to
you and wanting your products or services? These 5 powerful steps are not hard to implement and easy to accomplish right away. Having a powerful business blog can make you stand out above the crowd.

There are so many other ways to attract and build a large loyal following to your blog. Have you implemented any of the 5 powerful steps above?

How well do you know your neighbors?

by admin on January 6, 2011

Great story on how online and offline come together.

A fellow BNI member posted a discussion in a LinkedIn group.  He was looking to connect with a Real Estate Attorney in San Diego.

I knew a former BNI member who knew a Real Estate Attorney.

I initiated a three-way call and connected the two of them.

My BNI colleague got the phone number of the Real Estate Attorney and called him.

Turns out both of them work on the SAME floor of the SAME building and were able to meet face-to-face within minutes.

Small world indeed!
